Travelling to a NASCAR Cup Series race is all part of the experience, but being familiar with a few local driving rules can make your journey to Phoenix Raceway easier and far less stressful. While Arizona’s traffic laws are broadly similar to those in other U.S. states, there are some important points visitors should keep in mind.
In Arizona, vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road. If you normally drive on the left, allow yourself extra time to adjust, especially at intersections, when turning, and when joining multi-lane highways around the Raceway.
Posted limits depend on the type of road:
Speed limits can change quickly near exits and junctions, so keep an eye on signage. Enforcement is strict, with police using radar and traffic cameras, and penalties for speeding can be significant.
Traffic rules are closely monitored, and many major intersections are fitted with red-light cameras. Turning right on a red light is allowed only after a complete stop, unless a sign specifically prohibits it. Always give way to pedestrians, and avoid entering an intersection on a yellow if you can stop safely.
Arizona takes impaired driving very seriously. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and over, while under-21 drivers are subject to a zero-tolerance policy. During busy event weekends such as NASCAR races, DUI checkpoints may be in operation near the Speedway. If you plan to drink, arrange a designated driver or use a taxi or rideshare service.
Seat belts are compulsory for every occupant in the vehicle, regardless of seating position. Arizona is a primary enforcement state, meaning police can stop a vehicle solely for a seat belt violation. Make sure everyone is buckled up before setting off.
Drivers must yield to pedestrians at marked crosswalks and unmarked intersections. At four-way stops, the first vehicle to arrive proceeds first; if two arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right has priority. Around Phoenix Raceway, expect large numbers of fans on foot before and after the race, so reduce speed and stay vigilant.
If you are signaled to pull over, slow down and move to the right-hand shoulder when it is safe to do so. At night, choose a well-lit area if possible. Keep your hands visible on the steering wheel, follow instructions carefully, and remain calm and courteous throughout the stop.
